Thoroughly satisfying experience with Mikaleno's Guitar Repair. Mike left no stone unturned and addressed every single little issue that my Parker had... He must have a team of elf slaves helping him, because he got the job finished in record time.

I found Mikaleno thru FB and I'm so glad I did! Brought him every instrument I own . . . three stringed Italian Renaissance era guitar, dobro, acoustics, 12 string, a Strat and a 1938 Kay hollow body electric guitar! No matter what I threw at him, he rose to the challenge and not only fixed it, but made it better than it ever was! No kidding, the guy cares deeply about what he does and he knows exactly what he's doing. Super fair with his prices and a quick turn around time. SUPER happy! He can play like a mofo too . . .

Paul Sinogaya

I saw his ad on craigslist 2 years ago and decided to have my bass set-up and save some money. Plus he is local. The first bass I brought to him was a Fender Jazz usa. He did a way better set up job than the guitar tech at guitar center. From then on I had him set up two more basses from me plus other tweaks such as pickup work. The most recent work was a custom distortion pedal which was constructed (soldered) professionally (He used to work for Demeter and Fulltone). It sounds great. I have brought my 2 guitarists to have their guitars set-up by Mikaleno. The two started loving their guitars even more. When 1 fret problem surfaced out from my friend's guitar, Mikaleno swiftly fixed the problem for no extra charge. He always guarantees If there are any issues wit h his work, he will do his best to fix it.

Jimmy James 7/26/2012

As a guitarist in some of the hardest working bands in LA, I highly recommend Mikaleno. I've used many different guitar techs in Los Angeles and the valley, I found most all of them very good at what they do. In fact it's very rare I've gotten a guitar back that could not eventually be tweaked into a reliable instrument that feels great to play. That said, what I've found is most tech will do the minimum amount of set-up up work before they begin to discuss options...$$$

Mikaleno get's into your guitar from input jack to tuning keys and all points in between. And all for the low price of $60. If anything ends up being serious, you'll probably know that before you consider taking it in for a repair. For repairs I can tell you he repaired my 1976 Gibson Explorer after the neck broke and it is now one of my top guitars. As far as set-up goes, Mikaleno IS the king.

Jason R. 6/7/2012

Mike (Mikaleno's) knows what he is doing. He is a professional and always very generous with his time and insights. I've taken several pieces of gear to him, amps, pedals etc. And after each repair I've been thoroughly satisfied and pleased with his work. This guy is a class act, no BS.

P.B. 2/25/2014

Called Mikelano about a Baby Taylor with the headstock broken off at the joint. It's a travel guitar that sells for $300 new, so I contemplated gluing it myself -- but while I didn't want to spend a fortune to fix it, I like the thing enough to want find someone who would do it right. Mikelano quoted me $40 plus $5 for new strings, and I brought it in half an hour later. He must have done the work as soon as I left because it was ready the next afternoon. The joint looks perfect, the intonation is perfect, the action is great, and he'd put shims in the neck to straighten it and dressed a couple of high frets to boot, free of charge. The guitar plays better than when I bought it.

Who could ask for better than that?

Will G. 4/29/2013

I have had my Yamaha acoustic guitar for years and it has seen better days. I took it to Mikaleno and asked what he thought it would take to fix it. He looked it over. Then he said the strings had over the years pulled the guitar out of being true; he said the neck was pulled ever so slightly out and the string base area (not sure what the proper term is) was also pulled too. He said both the neck and the base area should be adjusted by detaching them and adjusting them to the guitar. It sounded like major work to me. So I asked if he felt he could fix both areas of my guitar. He said yes he could. Then I asked how much he'd charge me to fix both areas. He said $40 total. So I asked how long it would take him. He said a few days. Four days later I brought home my old but better-than-new Yamaha guitar. Based on my experience, I would definitely recommend Mikaleno. Great workmanship at a truly reasonable price!

Regina L. 9/28/2012

Mikaleno treated me like a rockstar....I had a gig coming up that week so he fixed my guitar right there in front of me. I was watching a guitarsmith! Wow. He did a full set up and I got to go home with my guitar within an hour. He did excellent work and has such a fair price. I LOVE IT! Can't wait to bring my new jazz guitar to him..when I get!! : - )

Dave H. 5/27/2012

I took a recently purchased used acoustic guitar to Mikaleno with little to know hope of it ever being playable again (I was just going to mount it on a wall as part of an art piece). He did an amazing job giving it a new set-up and re-stringing it, which he didn't charge me for. This old POS acoustic now has so much character to its sound now, its my go to in the studio for acoustic textures in larger arrangements. The color just adds to the mix.

While I was there he showed me a Telecaster that had been broken completely in two at the neck. He had just finished touching up the paint on the complete reconstruction. I was blown away. He was extremely nice and pleasant to do business with. If you need someone reliable and dependable, go to Mikaleno.

Tony F. 1/23/2012 Updated review

Mikaleno is one of the best guitar repairmen in L.A. I've been playing many years- do a lot of gigs. No time for half-assed equipment. Mikaleno takes care of all my guitars.

He's thorough, treats people with respect and his prices are cheap but not his quality. That's old-school. How it should be.

Nasser O. 11/11/2011

I've taken many of my basses and guitars to Mikaleno and hes has always gone above and beyond. This last guitar I took to him my input jack turned out to be defective and he replaced it with a new jack no extra charge at all. Things like that keep me coming back to him and when you factor in the price with all the work he does he can't be beat.

Mikaleno is knowledgeable and will get your instrument playing just how you like it so give him a buzz strongly recommended.

I've visited Mike with two 80's guitars and he's done a wonderful job making them sound great. The second was really in need of saving from gouged frets and it came back with no buzz anywhere, great job. I'm very surprised by any non-stellar reviews here, it sounds like a few people with either unreasonable expectations of their instruments or who knows what screws loose up top. Mike's been very nice, he gets things back to you quick and the prices are great for what you get out of a set up for sure.

Don't go anywhere else!I brought my guitar here yesterday and I was in and out in 20 minutes my input jack and the wiring inside totally fixed and then brought in the circuit board to the back of my cabinet today and same thing. In and out with my gear working 100% and the prices were cheaper then the quotes I got from the other places.I read the 1 star reviews that were posted earlier and I definitely didn't have any vibes like that. This guy is a class act and a lot of fun to talk about bands with.Thank you Mike!

I took my Les Paul special to get a set up and swap the pickups. I took it in thinking that it wouldn't need much work, but mike is a true professional and leaves no stone unturned. He leveled and beveled the frets, lowered the action, oiled the fretboard and a whole slew of other things. When I got there he told me he fixed the radius on my bridge. I didn't even know that my bridge had a problem. After I received the guitar I played it for an hour or so and I fell in love with it again. It played so much better than I had imagined. I wouldn't hesitate to take another guitar to mike. This is the third guitar he setup for me. For the work he does and the price he charges it's a complete steal. He is a nice guy and if there is anything you don't like with your after he will fix it. I highly recommend him and I'm taking all my guitars to him. Oh yeah he is an awesome player also.

I forgot to mention he has super fast turn around. I got my guitar back the same day.

Took my Acoustic-Electric in for a set-up. Mikelano noticed that the bridge was starting to get loose, so he took care of that for no extra charge. And he was fast. It was ready when he said it'd be. My guitar feels (and sounds) like new. Great work.

True story!

This is THE DOCTOR

I take my bass guitar to Mikaleno Amundson before just about every gig I play just to get a check up. He is a truly talented and knowledgable musician and business owner . He is very welcoming and makes me feel as if I've known him for years even though this is first year I've taken my own guitar in to see him personally. In fact he remembered having repaired my guitar 2yrs before! This is especially awesome because my guitar is so "quirky" and sensitive I never know where to begin when describing what's wrong with it. He even suggested other models that may not require as much maintenance as my current guitar. Now that's awesome! He looks out for his clients' best interests, he understands our "last minute" emergencies, our crazy lifestyles and cares enough to keep our business for years to come...his prices are not only fair but the services rendered are expeditious, thorough, above and beyond!

First off, understand that I don't write reviews very often. It takes either an awful experience, or one which far exceeds the competition & my expectations. In the case of Mikaleno's Guitar Repair, I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome of his work, and with the level of care and detail he puts into it.

Right from the start, from my initial conversation with Mike, to picking up my guitar, everything was top notch...AND it all came with that mom and pop shop feel AND with a level of professionalism that you don't usually even get at a larger or chain store.

I had gotten my Schecter C-1 Plus guitar completely set up, and had Seymour Duncan Blackouts active pickups installed.

The work was done THE SAME DAY, it was FLAWLESS and to say that it was reasonably priced, would be a huge understatement.

I would recommend that anyone who cares about the future of their guitar, to not even think twice about taking their baby to Mikaleno's shop. I'm already preparing to bring another electric over to have it set up as well.

And man, does he play a mean guitar, too.

Trust this gentleman with your instrument. Call ahead of time and arrange an appointment. Ask for directions. Be prepared to furnish a fresh set of strings when you go in. It will be worth it. I brought in 2 bass guitars: a Washburn and a Gibson. Each was given the "Set Up" service which amounts to $80 per guitar. How did I feel after I got them back? You know how Aragorn startles the King of the Dead with Elendil and triumphantly advises him that "IT HAS BEEN REMADE"? Yeah. That's how I felt. For those of you who don't get the previous reference, it was as if I was holding two, new bass guitars that practically played themselves. This maestro can repair anything with strings and he will not over-sell something that is not needed. Sounds refreshing, huh?

So glad to have found Mikaleno! I took four guitars (an acoustic, a 12-string acoustic, a Les Paul special and an ES-335) in to him in the last week and each one was better than new when I got it back. He explained everything that was done (and some of them needed a lot of work), and also gave recommendations on what could be done to improve them in the future. Really good work and a super nice guy.

If you even remotely think your axe can play or sound better, take it to Mike. My Hofner 500/1 Beatle bass played less than perfectly. Slight buzzing on some strings and frets, intonation problems, action too high, just a little unsatisfying which I chalked up to the antiquated nature of the Hofner. I was wrong. I dropped the bass off at Mike's, and in less than 2 days it was like a new instrument. The action is now perfect, no buzzing, no tone issues, just bass bliss. You wouldn't think of driving a car without occasional tuneups, and your instrument deserves even more TLC. Mike is like a mad scientist making guitars play and sound better. I highly recommend.

I've had guitar setups performed by different techs in LA and NYC over the past 10 years and Mike truly is as good as it gets! From the moment I met Mike, I knew that my guitars were in good hands. He is the first luthier to actually sit down and listen carefully to my needs as a player, and communicate with me his plan of action and what I could expect. The results speak for themselves - my Les Paul has never played so well until now! It's seriously like a totally new, better guitar. On my second guitar, a Fernades which I've been drop tuning pretty low for a production music job, Mike was super attentive and detail oriented with the setup. Afterwards, I was able to sit down with him and play the guitar as he made a few additional tweaks and fine tuning adjustments to get everything feeling just right for me and my playing style. Both guitars feel expertly setup, refined, and custom tailored to ME, which is everything I've ever wanted from a guitar setup! Think of Mike as your personal guitar technician.

Mike's prices are amazingly competitive ($80 a guitar, which is cheaper than a lot of places I've taken my guitar to), the turnover is fast, and the service and attention to detail is simply the best. Mike is a master of his craft, and you would do well to take your guitars to him!

Mike set up my Hamer electric guitar for me and it plays and sounds better then it did brand new 20 years ago. I am so happy with how it plays and he was such a pro about the repairs. Mike saved my ass. A brought my bass in because it stopped working but he could sense something else was wrong due to the volume output. He found that it was wired incorrectly, a problem I had no idea existed. Suddenly the volume output was twice as loud and the tone is significantly better, and no buzz.

I really can't say enough good things about my experience with Mike. I needed some work done on an acoustic electric that had been neglected for a while and not only did he fix the problem, he made it feel like a brand new guitar! He's so passionate about what he does and its obvious from the minute you meet him. You won't get the kind of care and effort that he puts into his work at a big music store. And it's at a low cost. After having my father's guitar absolutely butchered by Asken Fren's Guitars (which you can read a review for), I finally had a chance to get it fixed and looked for another guitar repair guy. Came across Mikaleno's Guitar Repair on yelp and decided to contact him amongst some other contenders for the job. I decided to call him and he seemed really nice on the phone and professional. The other guy I had contacted had some funky hours at his guitar shop so it worked out in Mikaleno's favor, who said I could basically come in anytime as he thought he could work on it the same day I called. He agreed the work done to it prior was a hack job, and that the guy probably didn't work at it at all and let it sit in his shop for all those months when I was trying to track him down and find out how the guitar was coming along (FOR A SIMPLE TUNE UP). For less than $100 bucks Mikaleno does the full set-up and checks every single component of the guitar. The lacquer on the headstock was completely butchered by Fren Asken and there is a photo up on my review for him. Mikaleno wanted to ensure this family guitar got justice, and fixed up the lacquer which was just so wonderful of him, and we all really appreciate that he got it back to its prior glory. He leveled the frets and fixed cleaned up the electrical wiring (which Fren insisted did not need to be worked on even though he was told the feed was breaking up when it would be plugged into an amp -- since he failed to work on it, even though he was told to check it out -- when we got it back from his shop it still wouldn't play on an amp!). Mikaleno is a stand-up guy, who works hard and is honest and a no b.s. man. My family and I appreciate these qualities when doing business with a person. I would bring any guitar to this man. His price is fair (which is rare in Los Angeles) and his turnover is so pleasantly fast! When that baby got home the NEXT DAY we could not put that guitar down! It sounded so great! My dad let me play with this guitar before I was even in grade-school, and he'd had it since the 70's, so it was just absolutely amazing that Mikaleno did the job that he did for us. It's a special guitar for the family. I am absolutely thankful for his repair and allowing me to make things right for the guitar after the terrible job and the disappointment and embarrassment caused by the business with Fren Asken.

Mikaleno's Guitar Repair is the ONLY place I'll take my instruments to going forward. Mike was able to bring a VERY beat up 1976 Les Paul Custom back to life. I initially took it in for a re-fret and set up. Mike ended up filling holes in the top, rebuffing the finish, and re-configuring my hack of a pickup replacement soldering job. He went WAY beyond my expectations, and now I have a super vibey old school LP Custom, that looks and plays like a show piece. He added at least 30 years of life to this guitar. It plays and sounds amazing. I HIGHLY recommend you taking your gear to Mialeno's repair shop. He cares about his work, and is super flexible in terms of cost. Much better than any of the local competition.

Mike is a real expert. A few months ago I purchased a used ESP/LTD EC-1000 but never had it set up. It sounded great but was hard to play. the action was really high and it just didn't feel right. I took it in to Mike for service. He did A+ work, had it back to me in 1 day, and it's unreal how well it plays now. I've paid more than $100 for a set up (that didn't include any fretwork, which Mike did for no extra charge), so to get all of this value for only $80 is a real deal.

You can tell his love and passion for the guitar when you speak with him in person. He took great care of my instrument and I will definitely be coming back with my others.

Hands down the best luthier and guitar repair guy in the biz!

Do not, I repeat , do not take your guitars for set ups or repairs anywhere else in LA but Mike.

A setup anywhere will cost $80 plus. Most will change your strings and rub some lemon oil on your guitar!

This was the most comprehensive set up I've ever had. I took in a 65 P Bass that had 20 plus year old strings on it, 63 Jazzmaster that sounded like a rats nest that it was, a 73 tele with strings siting on the neck and buzzing like a hive and Gibson jumbo acoustic that sounded like a cheap Yamaha!

The amount of work each guitar needs is (minus new pickups/hardware or intense wiring I guess) covered in the price. And my guitars had been neglected! Fret work, neck shims and adjustment, wiring issues, bridges lifting off, new bone nut are just some of the things he took care of.

Most importantly my guitars play and sound better than they ever have. I'm a producer but have also toured with a lot of big artists, some that I now produce. These instruments have appeared on records by Alicia Keys, Usher, Kelly Clarkson, Miguel to name a few. They've also appeared on stage with the two biggest losses of 2016, Bowie and Prince. I've always had guitar techs who were great but no one has my my stuff sound as good and play as well as Mike.

I can't recommend Mikaleno enough! I've brought him 3 guitars and each time he has done an amazing job. The last guitar I brought him was a Gretsch Black Falcon and I wasn't sure if it would ever play again. Mikaleno worked his magic and reset the neck and now it plays perfectly. This is the guy you want to bring your instruments to!

Mike has been maintaining my guitars FOR YEARS. He charges less than half of what I was paying the shop I went to before and he gets the guitars back to me in half the time - sometimes same day. Mike's passion for what he does is reassuring and inspiring. He loves all guitars so much, he usually takes my guitar out of my hands as soon as I arrive and starts plugging away on it. Picking my guitars up from Mike is always fun because I know I'll be getting a guitar that will play and usually look like a new guitar. Also, I always find a good parking spot in front of his place. I take my current guitars to Mike at least every six months for general maintenance and I take any new acquisitions I make directly to him - it's like de-fleaing a rescued dog or cat before you take him/her home. Gotta do it! Really, I believe in Mike and the work he does whole heartedly and give him my highest recommendation. Anyone who loves his/her guitars like they are family members should take their "babies" to Mike. You'll feel great about the work he does and even better about his fair rates. In short... Mike will rock your world!

I had a thoroughly positive experience with Mikaleno's Guitar Repair. Big stores or chains can't compete with his customer service. I brought a 1960's Hagstrom Bass that had seen better decades and a newer modified Epiphone SG that had never been setup. He checked them out and explained what he saw would need adjusting and answered all my questions. His return time is fast, but he even sent work in progress pictures. Both the Hagstrom and Epiphone now play better than ever. One needed a new input jack, in the other he intalled a new bone nut. His pricing is exceptional, especially for his holistic approach to getting your instrument in top playing condition. I can't wait to bring more guitars for Mikaleno to restore them to rockworthy status.
